The Quest Community was set up by the Revd. John Sumner and Alice Sumner in the 1990's with a vision to create a Christian Community similar to that found on Iona.
Over the first few years they built up an interesting collection of buildings. These consisted of St Margaret’s Chapel and Almshouses the Almshouses being six small properties in a garden behind the Chapel, and the shop plus flat above adjoining the chapel and fronting on to Magdalene Street.
The Sumner's also had a property at White Cottage in Bere Lane. The Community was run for a number of years and supported regular mid-day prayers in the chapel, work and events in the almshouses and sale of goods in the shop. At the same time support for the homeless was offered in White Cottage. This initiative proved to be non-sustainable and the Quest Community closed in 2000, with the buildings being hived off to four separate owners.
