Welcome to our site
The Purpose of this site is to help promote awareness of Glastonbury, UK, as an internationally recognized center of pilgrimage and transformation – and to do so by providing information on the people, and the projects they have established over the years, to enable this place to thrive. We are endeavoring to show how the myriad ideas, explorations and activities are all expressions of one coherent vision,that is bridging the gap between the tangible and the subtle, spiritual dimensions of our existence.
We seek to help reveal the new paradigm that is slowly emerging where human endeavor is nourished by ancient spiritual roots that reach backwards through the remote mists of time and flowers into the future.
Using the Site
There is a search facility on each page that enables specific items to be found.
We have also set up the index shown below where pages already on the site may be readily found.
|The Landscape||The History||Myths and Legends||Glastonbury's Purpose?|
|Pilgrimage||The People, Past and Present||Organisations and Centres||Buildings|
|Concepts and Ideas||Spiritual Paths||Shops and Businesses||Events|
Throughout this site, links coloured blue have a page complete with content associated with them, links coloured red do not yet have a completed page connected.
Glastonbury, originally called ‘The Ancient Isle of Avalon’, is on one level a Somerset market town, but is also a unique and sacred place that has potentially a role of spiritual significance to play in relation to both the British Isles and the planet as a whole.
The ‘People, Past and Present’ slot of the index above, has a time line attached so that you may look up people prominent at a specific time.
We are building this site with a record of Glastonbury, past, present and indeed future. This is a town that is growing and developing and how it is perceived changes with every era. We think it is worth trying to capture how the town was seen by people in their particular time of occupation. We therefore give the dates when articles were written and contributed on the clear understanding that life moves on and the town as seen today may well look completely different to how it appeared when the article was written.
As the Buddha says – ‘all is change - nothing remains the same for an instant’.
Developing the Site
Glastopedia is an encyclopedia of information on Glastonbury, past, present and future, in both its aspects, as a market town and as a world recognized Centre of spiritual transformation. There is already a lot of information available on individual websites on specific projects but surprisingly little information about the people involved in starting and running these sites.
We started this project in 2015 and, initially, put in a considerable amount of voluntary effort into establishing the site. It soon became clear that this was a time consuming business and at least some of the people involved would need to be paid. How to generate the necessary funds ? We were reluctant to take advertiising and were not able to develop a clear plan of how to acquire ongoing support from other sources. As a result, the site was kept on line but otherwise allowed to languish.
We are now running a short research program with two objects:
Define whether the site is of real value to the people of Glastonbury
If it is - then how can it be sustainably funded ?
On completion of this research we will either set the site up as a sustainable project or close it.
Content comes in two forms :
Articles contributed by individuals - these are shown with their date and the name of the contributor.
Articles contributed by ourselves, Glastopedia - these are listed with our name, when they were last up- dated, and details of the sources upon which the information is based.
If you would like to contribute an article, please look at our separate page, Contributing where we give details of what we are looking for and how to contact us.
If you would like to support us in any way in building the site, please have a look at the separate page - Support Glastopedia.
