Glastopedia is an encyclopedia of information on Glastonbury, past, present and future, in both its aspects, as a market town and as a world recognized Centre of spiritual transformation. There is already a lot of information available on individual websites on specific projects but surprisingly little information about the people involved in starting and running these sites.

In this site, we are using software similar to that used by Wikipedia. This enables individuals to make contributions direct to the site.

We started this project in 2015 and, initially, put a lot of voluntary effort into building the site. It soon became clear that more time was involved than we had originally envisaged and at least some of the people involved would need to be paid and this would need a reliable and income.

Little progress was made in establishing the needed sustainable income and in consequence the site was allowed to languish.

We originally felt that the right way to fund the project was that used by Wikipedia – that is not to use advertising on the site but to seek donations and income from other sources. This works well for Wikipedia, who have thousands, if not millions, of supporters worldwide to who they make an annual request for funds. Modest sums from this huge supporter base enables Wikipedia to flourish and grow. We have a different situation in Glastonbury, where at best there will be dozens of potential supporters and this is unlikely to generate a reliable income sufficient to support the activities of the site.

Alternatives are taking advertising, seeking substantial sponsors, selling items online and running the project under the auspices of some other profitable activity.

We now have the choice of either closing the site or finding a way of continuing it in a sustainable and competent fashion. We have therefor started a time-limited research project in order to investigate whether the site can be built into something that is seen to be genuinely useful to the people of Glastonbury and, if so, how such a site can be maintained and sustained.

We are keen to contact anyone who might be interested in taking on responsibility for this site from the point of view of encouraging new contributions, editing such contributions and resolving the current underlying problem of the long-term financing and sustainability of the project
